I have a special place in my heart for London’s SushiSamba because it was the first place where I didn’t get laughed at for ordering a cocktail without alcohol. The bartenders take great pride in mixing their drinks, and they make sure you get one that strikes your fancy.
Usually when I go to a new bar, I play it safe and pick a drink off the cocktail menu and ask them to make it alcohol-free. Here, they’re artists. I tell them the flavors I like and don’t like and they go to work. The ones that stand out in my memory had passion fruit and watermelon and got compliments from drinkers nearby, which always makes me smile.
The bar itself is a little bit of Vegas in London – a glass elevator swooshes you up to the 38th and 39th floors of the Heron Tower, where you walk out onto a patio to find a huge orange tree growing out of the outdoor bar amid striking views of The Gherkin, St. Paul’s and the Thames.
SushiSamba is uniquely a Peruvian-Japanese-Brazilian themed bar and restaurant chain with several locations in the U.S., including Las Vegas. You have to book a table if you want to eat, but you don’t need a reservation to drink in the two-floor bar area. Queues start after 6pm but it’s worth the wait. Dress code of “casual elegance” applies.
Decor: Smart business dress. Fancy people and drinks. Chandeliers and striking views.
