One of the things I had worried about my approaching birthday was being able to properly “celebrate” without alcohol. But thanks to Randall & Aubin, I didn’t miss a thing.
This French bistro is a lovely little nook in the heart of Soho and the perfect romantic spot to celebrate something like a birthday. They gladly accommodated a table for eight even though the whole restaurant probably seats less than 40. More importantly, they accommodated my unconventional request to bring my own (alcohol-free) champagne as well as a birthday cake.
While most restaurants would have balked at such a request, they didn’t even charge me a corking fee (I had offered to pay one). Not only that, they took the bottle from me discreetly so my guests wouldn’t notice, threw it on ice behind the bar — in a Veuve Cliquot bucket no less — and served it to me in a beautiful champagne glass throughout the evening.
The Carl Jung Sparkling White Wine (GBP5.99 online) I bought went perfectly with the Irish oysters and ribeye steak and chips I ordered. The food was outstanding in its own right. The meat was a substantial portion, nearly spilling over the chopping board it was served on, and cooked exactly as I had requested. At the end of the meal they served the cake without being asked, lit with candles.
And to make the evening complete, the staff got the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday to me.
I have never felt more special. I wonder if they do weddings….
